Accountants in Askern

Askern forms the eastern edge on the A19 road between Doncaster and Selby. It is a town and civil parish within the Metropolitan Borough of the hometown.

It was historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire and became a spa town in the late 19th Century, this stopped once coal mines opened up. In the 1990s, the last mine closed.

Askern had a population of 5,570 at the 2011 Census and is well known for its Askern Greyhound Stadium.

Early History

Through the centuries, Askern in Doncaster South Yorkshire, was known for its rich farming activities. On Nutwell Lane, the remains of a Roman Village and farm were found. The rich crop farming heritage continues today to some extent, with the area between Askern and M18 motorway still being dedicated to farming.

The Domesday Book recorded Askern as being the property of the monks of Roche Abbey, Maltby. They had a grange there which an official resided that managed this part of the estates of the establishment. They also had an officer which they called their forester.

The farm of Holm-Wood was included and the parish comprised 3,810 acres (15.4 km2). Scattered houses were mainly in the village.

Coal Mining

Askern became known for its coal mining during the late 19th and most of the 20th century. A deep seam Colliery was sunk named Markham Main. Due to the introduction of the Colliery, new housing estates needed to be made to house the mining workers. The housing estates were famous for their architectural layout. The houses are formed into rings or crescents, similar to Rossington.

The closure of the mine in 1996 saw the area go through a deep depression. The old colliery site now has a thriving community from the large housing estate, with parks and tracks for walking and cycling.
